During my writing course this semester, I developed a greater understanding of how time-consuming research can be. This was difficult for me to do on certain assignments. A comma cannot join two independent clauses because that is where a period is needed. Since both clauses can stand by themselves, there is no use of the comma. This is a place, however, for a semicolon.
