Praises to the Most High. CHAINED and BOUND by OTIS REDDING. I first heard this song on a local radio station in Fayetteville, NC. After hearing it for days on end, the station switch hands and I heard the song no more. The lyrics spoke to me when I was finishing my first published novel under the same name. I had a different title for this book, but Chained and Bound seemed more appropriate.

I painted my favorite quote by my favorite poet in my sketchbook. Painted by me, Phoebe Wahl, 2014. 1 What are you working on? I knew not.

As a plane rides lonely and level. On its radio beam, aiming. Of an airfield on the ocean. You want to ask, am I lonely? Well, of course, lonely. As a woman driving across country. Day after day, leaving behind. Little towns she might have stopped. And lived and died in, lonely. It must be the loneliness. Of waking first, of breathing.
