In his influential book, Mythologies, critical theorist Roland Barthes deconstructs a variety of popular images, such as soap advertisements and magazine covers, to illustrate how they strengthen dominant values. Like Bourdieu and Foucault, Barthes explores the origins of our cultural beliefs and reveals their socially constructed nature. Neither natural nor innocent, these myths aggressively protect dominant discourses within society.
